Ankur Maheshwari

One of the many standout individuals recognised at the 30th annual Private Banker International (PBI): Global Wealth Summit & Awards 2020, held virtually due to Covid-19, was Ankur Maheshwari, CEO of Equirus Wealth Private Limited (EWPL) in India. He got a Rising Star for Asia-Pacific trophy for establishing the ‘ab-inito’ wealth management (WM) unit from the beginning using his long experience at Citibank, JP Morgan and ICICI Bank.

Maheshwari was recognised alsongside other equally important rising stars in the category: • B60’s Wai Kin Chan; • Hana Bank’s Hyunjun Kim; and from • DBS Bank - Chee Loong Yong; Gaurav Wahi; Jynn Ong; Kenneth Leung; Paul Taurignan; & Sulaiman.

Equirus Wealth was set up ‘ab-inito’ two years ago with a digital wealth platform that offers a seamless service. According to EWPL, citing data from the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI), the firm is ranked 24th out of 852 players in the sector on Net Sales in the Financial Year 2019-20. It achieved this in just its second year of operation and during a volatile time, with Covid-19 recently bringing unprecedented medical and economic impacts. The firm has partnerships with some private sector commercial banks in India, such as Federal Bank and DCB Bank, acting as an extended WM arm for these banks and thereby easing its path to market.

Maheshwari has demonstrated capabilities in building a team, creating the technology platform and integrating it with core banking solutions, while setting up back-end operations and adhering to all relevant regulatory frameworks in the country.

He has worked at many different banks in many different nations in the past, gaining prior experience at:

  • ICICI Bank: early in his career in India, Maheshwari worked in the Private Banking Unit of ICICI Bank in sales, learning the modus-operadi of WM at a domestic bank.
  • JP Morgan: Maheshwari worked as an Equity Research Analyst at JPM and gained deeper insights into how to evaluate a company and its financials.
  • Citibank: More than a decade at one of the largest multi-national banks in the world, included various stints, such as Research & Advisory Head for the Consumer Bank in India, sharpening his understanding of capital markets and investments. He trained for this and other senor positions by gaining a place in 2011 on the APAC New Executive Training Programme in Singapore and was part of Citibank’s Fast-trax cross-franchise programme.
